Five mini-Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State was inaugurated on Thursday by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) partners.

This signifies efforts to deepen domestic Gas utilization, in agreement with the Federal Government’s Gas Revolution Agenda. The unveiling of the projects further shows the Federal Government’s efforts to stimulate economic growth and development.

The historic groundbreaking ceremony marked the official start of construction on five Mini-LNG plants, namely: NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete.

NNPC Ltd holds a stake in three of the five mini-LNG plants, with 90% in Prime LNG, 50% in NGML/Gasnexus LNG, and 10% in BUA LNG, while Highland LNG and LNG Arete are being developed by other private companies. Altogether, these plants have a total capacity of 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscf/d).

This groundbreaking collaboration between NNPC Ltd and private investors marks a significant step toward energy self-sufficiency, off-grid industrial support, and carbon emission reduction in the country. In his address, Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for siting the five Mini-LNG plants in the state, calling it a significant step in Nigeria’s journey toward achieving energy security.

The Governor praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leadership of NNPC Ltd, and its partners for recognizing Ajaokuta and Kogi State as viable locations for gas investments. He emphasized that the plants would open up vast investment opportunities, including both direct and indirect employment for the state’s large population.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the project by providing manpower, ensuring adequate security, and fostering collaboration with host communities throughout all phases of the project, from inception to completion.

Similarly, NNPC Ltd Chairman, Chief Pius Akinyelure, described the milestone as a major leap forward for Nigeria’s energy sector. He noted that it aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ushering in a new era of sustainable energy, energy security, and industrial development.
