Chevron and Engine No. 1 have unveiled a new partnership to create scalable, dependable power solutions for U.S.-based data centers powered by U.S. natural gas. Initial actions by the Trump Administration are laying the essential groundwork to stimulate investment, capitalizing on America’s energy abundance to support the nation’s AI leadership. The joint venture, in collaboration with GE Vernova, aims to build the first multi-gigawatt-scale co-located power plant and data center during President Trump’s second term.

The initial projects, referred to as “power foundries” by the companies, are set to utilize seven U.S.-made GE Vernova 7HA natural gas turbines, secured through a slot reservation agreement, on an expedited timeline. These projects are planned to supply co-located data centers in the U.S. Southeast, Midwest, and West regions. Initially, power generation is not intended to flow through the existing transmission grid, which helps mitigate the risk of raising electricity prices for consumers.

The companies’ plans directly address the demand for affordable, reliable energy to power U.S. data centers, facilitating the development of current and future generations of AI within the U.S. The joint development aims to deliver up to four gigawatts, enough to power 3-3.5 million U.S. homes, with initial service expected by the end of 2027, and the potential for further expansion. The projects will be designed with the flexibility to integrate lower-carbon solutions, including carbon capture and storage (CCS) — capable of capturing over 90% of CO2 emissions from the turbines — as well as renewable energy sources.

“Energy is key to America’s AI leadership,” said Chris James, founder and chief investment officer of Engine No. 1. “By using abundant domestic natural gas to generate electricity directly connected to data centers, we can secure AI leadership, enhance productivity across our economy, and restore America’s status as an industrial superpower. This partnership with Chevron and GE Vernova tackles the biggest energy challenge we face.”

“We are proud to contribute to President Trump’s vision for a new American golden age, powered by our vast energy resources and unparalleled workforce,” said Mike Wirth, Chevron CEO and chairman. “President Trump’s pro-American energy policies and commitment to energy and AI dominance give us the confidence to invest in projects that will create American jobs and enhance national security.”

“We are excited to help facilitate the growth of data centers in the U.S. by delivering the critical power required for customers through innovative solutions,” said Scott Strazik, CEO of GE Vernova. “GE Vernova is uniquely positioned to provide the energy systems and support necessary to make this large-scale project a reality, as the leading U.S. energy manufacturer.”

The rapid expansion of digital technology, including increased data consumption, cloud computing, and AI-driven solutions, demands cost-effective and scalable solutions to foster growth and prevent strain on the existing grid. Over time, this innovative model is intended to sell excess power to the U.S. power grid via future interconnections, helping meet broader energy needs while keeping costs low.

In addition to delivering affordable, reliable energy to a rapidly expanding sector of the U.S. economy, the joint development is expected to generate thousands of jobs and contribute to the reindustrialization of the U.S.
