The Federal Government plans to receive the first batch of 3.205 million electricity meters in April 2025 to address the metering gap. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced this in a statement, noting the meters are part of the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), which aims to deliver 3.2 million meters by 2026.

A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) has been set up to oversee its implementation.

Despite challenges, the government has made steady progress in metering, with 5.502 million meters installed by Dec 2024, covering 55% of active customers. In 2024, 572,050 meters were installed. The target is 2 million meters annually for the next five years, starting Q3 2024, with structured plans for sustainable progress.

Adelabu stated that the metering gap will not take over a decade to resolve, citing the DISREP and PMI initiatives for significant progress by year-end. In October 2024, the government announced 1.3 million meters under DISREP by Q2 2025. NERC reports 672,539 meters installed by Discos, leaving 7.3 million unmetered customers.
