The Federal Government has approved the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP), a comprehensive plan to reform Nigeria’s power sector. Announced after the Federal Executive Council meeting, the policy aims to boost governance, investment, and sustainability across the electricity value chain.
Initially drafted in December 2024, the NIEP aligns with the Electricity Act 2023 and includes goals like renewable energy adoption, energy efficiency, and improved regulation. Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu confirmed implementation has begun, describing the NIEP as a strategic roadmap for all stakeholders in Nigeria’s energy transition.
The NIEP aims to dismantle monopoly structures in power distribution and generation, promote State Electricity Markets, and support decentralized, coordinated energy planning. It empowers sub-national actors in electricity management. With its implementation, Nigeria is expected to see increased investment, more efficient power supply, and better service quality.
