Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), praised Mallam Mele Kyari for his transformative leadership at NNPCL. Kyari’s tenure is remembered for key reforms, including the company’s commercial transition, the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), fuel subsidy removal, and the revival of domestic refining.

Ugochinyere noted that Kyari left a lasting impact and exited “when the ovation was still high.”Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere highlighted key achievements of Mallam Mele Kyari’s leadership at NNPCL, including the company’s transition into a commercially driven entity ready to compete globally. Kyari played a crucial role in the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and the revival of the Port Harcourt Refinery, which can process 210,000 bpd.

Ugochinyere also noted progress at the Warri Refinery, with a capacity of 125,000 bpd, and its recent resumption of operations in December 2024, marking a significant step in improving Nigeria’s fuel production and supply.Ugochinyere also praised the Dangote Refinery, commissioned in May 2023, as part of Kyari’s broader strategy to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on fuel imports.

The world’s largest single-train refinery began petrol production in September 2024, gradually increasing output from 25 million liters to 35 million liters per day.“These achievements were made possible through Mele Kyari’s tireless efforts as Group Managing Director of NNPC and later as Group CEO of NNPCL, established by the PIA,” Ugochinyere noted.
