Zurich, Switzerland – The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has officially approved a significant rule change for the upcoming football season: goalkeepers will now be penalized if they hold the ball for more than eight seconds.

IFAB Approves 8-Second Goalkeeper Rule for Next Season

This new regulation will result in a corner kick being awarded to the opposing team if a goalkeeper exceeds the eight-second limit.

The decision aims to increase the pace of the game and reduce time-wasting tactics.

This rule change is set to have a considerable impact on how goalkeepers manage possession and distribute the ball, forcing them to be more decisive in their actions.

It will also likely lead to tactical adjustments by teams and managers to capitalize on potential corner kick opportunities.
