NNPC Limited and FIRST E&P JV have discovered significant hydrocarbons in the Songhai Field, OML 85, with over 1,000 feet of hydrocarbon-bearing sands across eight reservoirs.

Meanwhile, NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd and NIPCO Gas Ltd signed a 20-year Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement on March 6, 2025, to supply 80 mmscf of natural gas daily to Ssonic Petroleum’s planned LNG plant in Lekki Free Trade Zone.NNPC Ltd aims to boost domestic gas use with its latest supply deal, promoting cleaner energy.Preliminary analysis of the Songhai Field indicates significant oil and gas volumes.

Further evaluations will refine estimates and optimize development.FIRST E&P’s GM, Segun Owolabi, called the discovery a major milestone.The Songhai Field discovery highlights the JV’s exploration success and commitment to sustainable value.NNPC Limited sees it as key to boosting production and cutting costs.

NUIMS’ Engr. Seyi Omotowa emphasized its alignment with NNPC’s upstream goals through strategic partnerships and advanced technology.The discovery underscores collaboration in expanding Nigeria’s hydrocarbon reserves.NNPC CEO Mele Kyari reaffirmed commitment to efficiency and long-term value.

The JV currently produces 57,000 bopd from OML 83 and 85, with the Songhai Field expected to boost output and energy security.The NNPC/FIRST E&P JV prioritizes operational excellence, safety, and efficiency, achieving over 9 million LTI-free man-hours.This milestone boosts Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, supporting the government’s goal of increasing production and sustainable energy growth.
