Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the US is prepared to impose aggressive sanctions on Russian energy to push for a Ukraine ceasefire, following President Trump’s directive. Speaking at the Economic Club of New York, Bessent emphasized that sanctions would be used for maximum impact.

The Trump administration aims to leverage these measures to encourage Ukraine to negotiate with Russia. The Trump administration is pushing for a Ukraine ceasefire by tying US involvement in developing Ukraine’s natural resources to peace talks with Moscow. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized the Biden administration for being too cautious with Russian energy sanctions.

To pressure Ukraine into negotiations, the US has paused military aid and limited intelligence sharing.Bessent stated that the US will escalate sanctions on Iran, aiming to “shut down” its oil sector with set benchmarks and timelines. He emphasized that crippling Iran financially is central to the updated sanctions policy. The US plans to engage with regional players, including Russia, to curb Iran’s oil trade and halt its drone manufacturing.

Bessent highlighted that Trump’s strategy aims to strengthen US global influence while encouraging nations to invest more in their own defense.“We may already be seeing a major success with Germany’s talks on significantly increasing military spending,” he noted.”Sharing security responsibilities is essential among allies,” he added. “American taxpayers, military resources, and lives should no longer shoulder the entire burden of maintaining trade and mutual security.”
