TotalEnergies and Air Liquide plan a €600M ($628M) joint venture for green hydrogen production. They will build a 250MW wind-powered electrolyzer for Total’s Zeeland refinery and supply its Antwerp plant from Air Liquide’s 200MW Rotterdam project.

Total’s push for low-carbon hydrogen contrasts with its peers’ cautious approach.TotalEnergies’ Vincent Stoquart said the Air Liquide partnership advances its goal to decarbonize hydrogen use in European refineries by 2030.

The Zeeland electrolyzer is set for 2029, while the Antwerp supply project aims for late 2027, pending final investment decisions.Air Liquide’s hydrogen pipeline will also serve other Dutch and Belgian customers.

Total will power both electrolyzers with offshore wind energy from the Netherlands, while Air Liquide will source clean power from a Vattenfall wind farm.

Together, the projects will exceed €1 billion in investment and cut up to 500,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. Air Liquide will use electrolyzer tech from its Siemens Energy joint venture.
