NNPC and First E&P cut routine flaring by 96% at Anyala and Madu fields, reinjecting gas for future commercialization.“This highlights our commitment to sustainable energy,” said NNPC CEO Mele Kyari.

Anyala (OML 83) and Madu (OML 85) fields, operated by First E&P, produce 57,000 barrels per day in Niger Delta’s shallow waters.Nigeria flared gas equal to 16 million metric tons of CO₂ in 2024, wasting 30,100 GWh of power and $1.05 billion in valuable gas, per NOSDRA’s tracker.

Salako cited a lack of infrastructure and weak enforcement as key challenges in ending gas flaring, despite regulatory efforts.

Nigeria’s gas policies have shifted from production focus to tackling flaring, with new measures aimed at its reduction and eventual elimination.

Salako highlighted key policies like the 1979 Gas Re-injection Act and the 2016 Gas Flare Commercialization Program to curb flaring. He warned that many oil firms ignore NOSDRA’s transparency calls, stressing the Environment Ministry will enforce stricter accountability. NOSDRA now tracks flare volumes and CO₂ emissions.
