
The Benue State Government has launched solar-powered electric taxis in partnership with Esse Mobility to provide affordable, eco-friendly transport and create jobs. The pilot phase starts in Makurdi, with plans to expand to other cities. Esse Mobility’s founder, Okey Esse, highlighted the initiative as a key step in Nigeria’s clean energy transition. The vehicles, powered entirely by solar energy, feature real-time passenger monitoring for enhanced safety.
Esse Mobility plans to deploy 500 solar-powered taxis across Benue State by December, starting in Makurdi and expanding to other cities. Each vehicle is equipped with advanced security features for real-time monitoring. The initiative aims to establish assembly plants, generate direct and indirect employment, and create at least 8,500 jobs across operations, charging centers, and administration.The Benue State Government praised the launch of solar-powered electric taxis as a major step toward sustainability and economic growth.
BIPC Managing Director Raymond Asemakaha highlighted the project’s role in reducing fossil fuel dependence, cutting emissions, and boosting the state’s GDP through job creation. He emphasized the public-private partnership with Esse Mobility as a model for innovation. BIPC’s Theresa Abeda noted the initiative will transform urban transport in Benue. The move aligns with global trends and national efforts, such as Nigeria’s Electric Vehicle Development Plan and the Paris Agreement goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
