NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML), a subsidiary of NNPC Ltd, plans to acquire a 5.2 million standard cubic feet per day CNG compression and refuelling facility from Gas Network Services Limited (GNSL).This move aims to expand Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure, improving access to cleaner energy for industries and transport. GNSL currently operates the facility, which supplies compressed gas to off-pipeline customers and refuels natural gas vehicles (NGVs).
The acquisition will strengthen NGML’s role in gas distribution, making CNG more accessible and affordable across Nigeria. The planned acquisition by NGML supports the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNG Initiative), launched in August 2023 to promote CNG adoption as a cleaner, cheaper alternative to traditional fuels following subsidy removal.
The move is part of broader efforts to expand CNG infrastructure nationwide. Recently, the P-CNG Initiative and LNG Arete Ltd. signed a $27.3 million MoU to boost CNG infrastructure development in Northern Nigeria. The initiative seeks to tackle the region’s ongoing energy challenges, particularly in transportation and industry, where access to reliable and affordable energy has been limited.
Launched by President Bola Tinubu in August 2023, the P-CNG Initiative aims to transform the transportation sector, with plans for over 11,500 new CNG-powered vehicles and 55,000 CNG conversion kits for existing vehicles that rely on PMS.
