UK – Saturday – In an unprecedented turn of events in the Premier League this season, all three newly promoted teams have been relegated back to the Championship.

Shocking Turn: All Newly Promoted Teams Suffer Immediate Relegation

Ipswich Town, Southampton, and Leicester City have all had their immediate return to the second tier of English football confirmed.

This outcome is particularly surprising given the optimism surrounding their arrivals in the Premier League at the beginning of the 2024-25 season.

However, all three clubs struggled to find consistent form and accumulate enough points to secure their top-flight status.

  • Southampton’s relegation was confirmed earliest in the season following their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on April 6th. Despite a change in management, they were unable to pull themselves out of the relegation zone and ultimately finished in the bottom three.
  • Leicester City, who were also promoted as Championship winners alongside Burnley, also found the step up challenging. Despite some flashes of quality, they lacked consistency, and their relegation was confirmed on April 20th following their loss to Liverpool.
  • Ipswich Town’s fate was sealed most recently following their 3-0 defeat away to Newcastle United on Saturday. They needed a win and other results to go their way to have any hope of survival, but the loss confirmed their immediate return to the Championship.

This clean sweep of relegations for the promoted sides highlights the increasing competitiveness and difficulty for newly promoted teams to establish themselves in the Premier League.

It also means that the Championship play-off final will be even more significant, with the winner knowing they will be aiming to avoid the same fate next season.
