
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved a 10MW Independent Power Project (IPP) at Abia State University, Uturu, to tackle persistent electricity issues on campus and in nearby communities. He made the announcement in Otamkpa during the defection of Hon. Lucky Johnson from PDP to LP. The project aligns with the stateโs broader energy reform agenda and aims to ensure reliable power supply for ABSU and Uturu residents.
Governor Otti stated that with the recent signing of the Abia State Electricity Bill into law, the state can now independently establish renewable energy and IPP projects. He added that preparations are underway to launch the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency (ASERA), which will manage power generation and distribution.
A seasoned Abia-born professional with experience in Canada’s energy sector will head the agency.Governor Otti declared an end to power outages in Abia, emphasizing his commitment to sustainable development. He also reaffirmed a broader infrastructure agenda, promising that power upgrades will be matched with road rehabilitation and other key projects to ensure smooth transportation across the state.
Stakeholders praised Governor Otti for his leadership and commitment to energy and infrastructure development. Hon. Amobi Ogah and Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa hailed him as a visionary leader, while Justice Commissioner Ikechukwu Uwanna noted that Ottiโs achievements have surpassed expectations.
Community leaders from Isuikwuato and Uturu expressed gratitude for the power project and ongoing infrastructure improvements.Dr. Onyinyechi Rufus-Obi of GODA welcomed the 10MW IPP, saying it will boost quality of life and economic activity. The project is expected to serve as a model for decentralized, state-led power solutions in Nigeria.
