Electricity consumers in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have criticized the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for discriminatory electricity distribution, with Band B to E customers facing erratic supply despite being billed.

Band A customers receive 18-20 hours of daily electricity at a higher rate, while lower bands are charged less but experience poor service, leading to claims of an unfair, two-tier system.

Under the current structure, Band A customers are a small minority, mostly in commercial areas and elite neighborhoods, while the majority in Bands B to E remain underserved.Despite power sector reforms, issues of fairness, infrastructure gaps, and regional disparity persist.

In 2024, Minister Adebayo Adelabu announced plans to remove the electricity subsidy for Band A customers, citing a N1.3 trillion debt to GenCos and $1.3 billion owed to gas companies.
