Dr. Muda Yusuf, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprises (CPPE), has cautioned that Nigeria’s ongoing energy crisis will worsen if the government proceeds with its proposed ban on the importation of solar panels.

Yusuf issued this warning on Wednesday in response to a recent statement by the Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, who revealed that the government plans to prohibit the importation of solar panels as part of efforts to promote local production.

The CPPE chief argued that restricting imports without sufficient domestic production capacity would create significant challenges for the country.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s current solar panel manufacturing industry lacks the capability to meet national demand, and an outright ban could exacerbate energy shortages, hinder access to alternative power solutions, and negatively impact businesses and households relying on solar energy.
