MODEC signs contract with Shell for FPSO unit in Brazil to support offshore oil production

MODEC has signed a 20-year contract with Shell Brasil for an FPSO unit at the Gato do Mato oil field offshore Brazil. MODEC will design the hull and topside facilities, with the FPSO storing and offloading stabilized crude.

The unit will feature a custom “next generation hull” for a 25-year design life.MODEC signed a contract with Shell for FPSO Gato do Mato, capable of producing 120,000 bopd, gas, and water. Located 124 miles off Rio de Janeiro at 2,000 meters depth, it will be MODEC’s 19th FPSO for Brazil and the second delivered directly to Shell.

In February, MODEC signed a FEED contract with Samsung E&A for an offshore carbon capture pilot using Carbon Clean’s CycloneCC technology. The project will be the first CycloneCC deployment on a MODEC FPSO vessel.MODEC CTO Koichi Matsumiya emphasized the company’s focus on stable energy supply with minimal GHG emissions and developing floater solutions for alternative energies.

He believes Carbon Clean’s carbon capture technology will help achieve both goals and aims to deploy it offshore quickly.Cheon Hong Park, Executive VP at Samsung E&A, expressed excitement about collaborating with MODEC and Carbon Clean on the carbon capture pilot project.

He highlighted the project’s significance as the first marine application of Carbon Clean’s technology, aiming to support MODEC’s decarbonization goals and accelerate CycloneCC’s commercialization. He emphasized the company’s commitment to a cleaner, sustainable future through successful project delivery and strengthened partnerships.
