
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Venezuela that attacking Guyana or Exxon Mobil would be a serious mistake. His remarks came after a Venezuelan patrol ship entered Guyanese waters near an Exxon-contracted vessel.
Speaking in Georgetown, Rubio emphasized that such aggression would have severe consequences for Venezuela.Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro reignited a long-settled border dispute to rally support for his reelection, despite Venezuela’s military vastly outmatching Guyana’s.
However, Guyanese President Irfaan Ali has secured international backing from the UK, France, and the US. In Georgetown, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned of U.S. naval power and reaffirmed commitments to strengthening ties with Guyana.
Rubio was also set to visit Suriname, which aims to promote oil exploration in offshore areas near Guyana’s discoveries.
