US tariffs spark criticism at Houston energy event.

At CERAWeek in Houston, Canadian officials and executives criticized US trade tariffs, calling them an unjust economic threat.

Ontario’s Energy Minister labeled it an “attack,” while Saskatchewan’s Premier expressed shock and anger, urging Canada to seek new trade partners.At CERAWeek, Canadian officials criticized US tariffs, with Alberta’s energy minister saying, “Friends don’t do that to friends.” Despite tensions, Alberta’s premier saw no slowdown in oil output.

After Trump announced 50% tariffs on Canadian metals in response to Ontario’s 25% electricity surcharge, Ontario suspended its plan, but the US confirmed 25% tariffs on metals starting at midnight.US tariffs will raise costs for energy projects. Tenaris and Williams Cos. executives warned of price hikes, calling tariffs a burden.

The oil and gas industry is seeking exemptions, said trade group leader Erik Milito.Tariffs are shaking market confidence, with Vitol’s Russell Hardy citing price instability and TotalEnergies’ CEO warning of recession risks. Canadian officials saw an upside, urging less US reliance and stronger competitiveness.
