API CEO Mike Sommers, speaking at the Economic Club of Pittsburgh, highlighted AI-driven electricity demand and outlined policy solutions for the Trump administration and Congress to sustain U.S. energy growth.”The scale of America’s energy demand is immense, and we have the chance to power that future,” said API CEO Mike Sommers.

He highlighted AI’s unprecedented electricity needs, noting that keeping AI infrastructure in the U.S. could require 51 gigawatts—more than Pennsylvania’s total generation capacity. After years of stability, U.S. power consumption is set to rise 25% in seven years, needing an extra 1,000 terawatt hours—equivalent to Japan’s annual output.

Yet, in 2023, the U.S. generated less electricity than five years ago.Sommers called for reforms to rebuild energy infrastructure, including permitting changes, LNG export approvals, and expanded leasing of federal lands and waters.

He underscored Trump’s “energy mandate” and API’s Five Point Policy Roadmap as key strategies for the administration and Congress.”Americans want leaders to embrace the pioneer spirit that built our great nation,” Sommers said. “A new American century needs American power—let’s seize the moment and unleash our energy.”
