Nigeria, Algeria, and Niger signed agreements on February 11 in Algiers to advance the $13 billion Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project.

The deals cover a feasibility study, compensation framework, and NDA.Presidential aide Dada Olusegun confirmed the involvement of energy firms from the three countries.According to Olusegun, the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) will transport natural gas from Nigeria through Niger to Algeria for export to Europe and global markets.

The 2,565-mile pipeline will link Nigeria’s Warri hydrocarbon fields to Algeria’s Hassi R’Mel hub on the Mediterranean coast.

The Algerian section will cover 1,435 miles, over half of the pipeline’s length.Once completed, the TSGP will carry up to a trillion cubic feet of natural gas annually.Proposed in the 1970s, the project saw progress in 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2009 but later stalled.

Discussions resumed in 2022 when energy ministers from Nigeria, Algeria, and Niger revived plans to advance the project.
