Women in Energy: Exploring Opportunities in the Industry

Women in Energy, Oil and Gas (WEOG) is strengthening partnerships and urging members to collaborate for more opportunities in the sector.At the WEOG 2025 annual meeting in Lagos, stakeholders discussed “Collaborating for a Sustainable Energy Future.”Dr. Hansatu Adegbite, UN Women Consultant, highlighted national and global initiatives for women, including emerging gender-responsive procurement policies in Nigeria.

In Nigeria, over $6.6 billion is spent on private sector procurement annually, yet women-owned businesses receive less than 1%.Dr. Hansatu Adegbite noted that UN Women and the World Bank are supporting women with training, procurement skills, and certifications.

As a WEOG advisory board member, she urged members to build a strong structure and collaborate to maximize opportunities.WEOG’s founding president, Dr. Oladunni Owo, expressed confidence in women making strides in the male-dominated oil industry.Dr. Oladunni Owo noted the federal government’s efforts to boost energy self-sufficiency through increased upstream production, midstream participation, and local refining.

New WEOG President, Engr. Tolu Longe, urged members to challenge barriers, reshape the narrative, and support mentorship and collaboration for industry growth.The event also saw the inauguration of new executives and the induction of new members.
