Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have fully disconnected from Russia’s power grid and synchronized with Europe via Poland. The European Commission confirmed their complete energy independence from Russia and Belarus.Previously linked to Finland, Poland, and Sweden, the Baltic states had still operated in sync with Russia until now.

The Baltics have exited the 2001 BRELL agreement, cutting ties with Russia-controlled frequency management. Now synchronized with Europe, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania ensure stable, reliable energy in cooperation with EU nations. All electricity connections with Russia and Belarus are permanently severed, serving over 400 million European customers.

The Harmony Link Interconnector, a 330 km submarine HVDC line between Poland and Lithuania, is delayed until 2030.The Baltics’ synchronization with Europe ensures energy independence under common EU rules. The European Union prioritizes the project, allocating over €1.23 billion ($1.27 billion) from the Connecting Europe Facility.

Launched over 15 years ago, the project was accelerated on August 3, 2023, when Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania agreed to advance completion to February 2025, driven by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
