China retaliates against U.S. tariffs by imposing measures on coal, gas, and Google as Trump’s trade policies take effect.

After the U.S. imposed 10% tariffs at midnight ET on Tuesday, China responded with 15% tariffs on American coal and LNG, 10% on crude oil and farm equipment, and other countermeasures effective Feb. 10.Beijing condemned the U.S. move as a WTO violation and launched an anti-monopoly probe into Google.

It also imposed export controls on rare metals and blacklisted U.S. firms PVH Group and Illumina for alleged discriminatory practices.China is actively responding to the Trump administration’s tariffs.China’s response did not directly mention U.S. tariffs.Trump imposed tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico to pressure them on migration and drug issues.

Tariffs on Canada and Mexico are delayed after border security agreements.Analyst Julian Evans-Pritchard called China’s retaliation “modest,” affecting up to $20 billion in U.S. imports—far less than the $450 billion hit by U.S. tariffs. He noted China’s response was measured but warned it could provoke further escalation.China, a key supplier of fentanyl precursors, claims it has helped curb the drug’s flow to the U.S.

After Trump’s new tariffs, Beijing warned of strained cooperation and vowed a WTO challenge.Trump threatened further tariff hikes, while White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said he would speak with Xi Jinping within 24 hours.
