Recovery is an inside job
I’m left with a lot of sadness which meditation and MBSR doesn’t seem to address and which alcohol at least masked for me. I’m not going back to drinking but am looking for ideas on how to move forward. And yes, sometimes I get jealous of my friends that can drink normally. But now, I get to be the person who makes sure they get home safe from the bar. And I’m also the one who doesn’t wake up with a hangover.
The physical and psychological withdrawals are one thing, but learning how to live as a sober person with problems that can’t be masked in alcohol is quite another. When I hang out with my “normie” friends, and they have a couple of beers, loosen up a bit and then head home without doing anything crazy, out of control or self-destructive. I look at them and https://ecosoberhouse.com/ there’s a part of me that envies their ability to put down a drink, to enjoy alcohol responsibly without having it take over their lives. It makes me feel like I am just an out-of-control person. And another thing about sobriety…who would want to know what his spouse thinks of him?
It is an awkward, vulnerable dance between two awkward, vulnerable humans. My view is that sobriety is the right choice, and currently I am that. I was never a chronic drinker but I noticed bad patterns so I stopped totally. I had stopped for 2 years, decided to drink moderately again, before ultimately stopping probably for good this year. - What a waste of my perfectly good perpetual horniness.
- Whether you’re here to enjoy my free content or looking forward to diving deeper with future paid offerings, there’s something here for everyone.
- But when life sucks, staying sober can be more than hard, it can feel like it’s next to impossible.
- Let’s also acknowledge that most of us who drink alcoholically are self-absorbed.
- If I still feel these horrible things in sobriety, something is wrong with ME.
Remember what life was like when every moment was chaos and unmanageable. Remember how family and friends wouldn’t return calls or didn’t trust to leave you alone. And you’ll remember what you’ve got to fight for. I’ve spent the last seven years researching and understanding alcoholism, addiction, and how people get sober.
Things That Inevitably Happen to Your Personal Life When You Get Sober
Listen as we discuss how sobriety and twelve step is portrayed in specific media, books, movies and television. God grant me the serenity to rock the house down tonight. I remember when I was considering sobriety, and I carefully crafted my opinion of Alcoholics Anonymous. Who does that, when instead, we all have the opportunity to do the same things, over and over again, and just expect different results? That’s the key to successful alcohol moderation. Take some compulsiveness, stir in some chaotic mind syndrome, sprinkle on some childhood trauma, and finish it off with a heaping dose of insanity.
You’ll Start To See Things Differently
I would go on walks a few times a week because getting high and walking is super fun. I socialized with people more because people are more fun and entertaining and easy to talk to after a few glasses of wine. I’ve been waiting for the clarity of sobriety to wash over me and improve my life, but I think I might be someone who’s better off lost in the sauce. The whole reason I wrote my eBook Sobriety Doesn’t Have To Suck!
Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Their recovery is none of your business, and vice versa. But you have to create that for yourself and trust that if you REALLY commit to it, that you’ll get there eventually. Whatever it is, if you keep working on your sobriety and believing that you have the power to change your life, you will do exactly that. But one day, you realize the clouds have lifted a little bit. For the first time, you notice just how much has changed.
